Tottenham Hotspur are out of the running to sign Alex McCarthy.

Tottenham Hotspur’s search for a new goalkeeper is over, and that will come as a relief to Southampton after recent speculation.

Tottenham announced Michel Vorm has signed a one-year contract extension with the club after Spurs activated an option in his contract, they confirmed on their official website.

Just last week, Tottenham had been linked with a swoop for Southampton’s Alex McCarthy.

Alex McCarthy of Southampton shouts instructions during the Premier League match between Southampton and AFC Bournemouth at St Mary's Stadium on April 28, 2018 in Southampton, England.

The Mirror reported Spurs are watching McCarthy’s situation closely, even though the Saints value him at a whopping £30 million.

With Vorm staying to back up France international Hugo Lloris at Tottenham, Southampton can breathe a bit easier – but they are not off the hook yet.

Alex McCarthy of Southampton warms up during the Premier League match between Swansea City and Southampton at Liberty Stadium on May 8, 2018 in Swansea, Wales.

Ominously for the Saints, The Mirror reported last night that Liverpool are keen on McCarthy.

Given their prolific raids on Southampton over the last four years, the south coast club will not be taking anything for granted.

But for now at least, one major club is out of the running for their number one, and if Liverpool decide to look at a higher profile player as their fans would prefer, then Southampton may be able to hang onto the former Reading stopper.
