Hugo Lloris produced an indifferent campaign for Tottenham Hotspur last season as he simply cannot afford those same type of performances ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

It has been quite a rollercoaster 12 months for Hugo Lloris, who has endured a number of questionable performances during that time despite winning the World Cup with France and then helping Tottenham reach the Champions League final.

Goalkeeper Lloris wasn’t the only Tottenham player producing poor performances last season, but his mistake in the World Cup final against Croatia, albeit it’s forgotten about now because his country ended up winning, filtered its way into the 2018/19 campaign.

There can be a number of reasons behind that. From just being purely out of form to Mauricio Pochettino having to grind out results with a very thin squad last season to the club having to deal with the delays of moving into their new stadium.

But ahead of the new campaign, the players should be fresher because the European players haven’t been involved in a tournament, Tottenham will start the season in their new stadium, and new signings are walking through the door.

Despite the season ending with a heartbreaking Champions League final defeat to Liverpool, things are upbeat for one half of North London.

Therefore, Lloris, who earns £100k-a-week [Spotrac], simply cannot afford to repeat his mistakes from last season because then many supporters will be calling for his head and it won’t be pleasant.

What the Frenchman perhaps needs is a favour from Pochettino and Daniel Levy. If they were to dip into the transfer market and purchase a ready-made experienced goalkeeper, it might just provide Lloris with the much-needed kick up the backside that he needs.

That serious challenge from behind can spur him on, and potentially bring the best out of him. And if that can happen then Pochettino will have one of the best keepers in England’s top-flight on his hands.
