Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Winks is a full England international.
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks has told The Guardian of his “shock” after being called up into the England squad last week.
Injuries to Fabian Delph and Phil Jones saw the 21-year-old Tottenham ace given a promotion into the senior side for qualifiers with Slovenia and Lithuania.
And the youngster impressed on his full England debut away to Lithuania on Sunday as a goal from Spurs team-mate Harry Kane sealed a 1-0 victory.
Winks has started two of the Lilywhites’ last three games – two victories over Huddersfield Town and APOEL in the Champions League – but only had one cap for Aidy Bothroyd’s Under-21 side prior to his promotion.
And the talented Tottenham product admits he was shocked when Bothroyd informed him that Gareth Southgate wanted to bring him into the senior set-up.
“I got the text from the under-21s manager to come to the dressing room and I went in there and he told me I was promoted to the senior squad,” he told The Guardian.
“I was in shock. I didn’t really believe it. Then he took me up to see Gareth and luckily it all went well.”
Winks will hope to keep his place this weekend when Tottenham resume club football with the visit of Bournemouth to Wembley.
