Tottenham Hotspur have a good record in the January transfer window, but there have still been some clangers along the way.

While Tottenham Hotspur boast a good record when it comes to signing players during the January transfer window, things have not always gone according to plan.

With that in mind, here is a look at arguably the five worst signings Tottenham have made since the introduction of the winter window…

5. Adel Taarabt

Adel Taarabt is undoubtedly a player who had the potential to play regularly in the Premier League. Unfortunately, those glimpses of incredible quality were virtually never seen by the Spurs faithful, and he instead made his name, for good and bad reasons, with Queens Park Rangers.

4. Emil Hallfredsson

Emil Hallfredsson may be better known to some as one member of the Iceland squad that surprised so many at this summer’s European Championships, but he also spent a spell of his career with Tottenham, and not a short one at that. The 32-year-old joined Spurs in 2005 and did not play a single first-team game before his departure in 2007.

3. Gilberto

Two Gilberto’s have moved to North London since the turn of the Millennium. And while Arsenal’s midfielder shone during his time in the Premier League, Tottenham’s certainly failed to capture the imagination. A mistake on his debut led to the game’s only goal and saw him replaced at half-time, and it did not get that much better from there. Just three appearances came in his only full season with the club.

2. Bongani Khumalo

When Bongani Khumalo was released by Tottenham in 2015, he left having been sent out on loan five times and having not made a single appearance for the Spurs first-team during his four-and-a-half year stay at White Hart Lane.

1. Hossam Ghaly

Of the players on this list, no player got the opportunity to make as much of an impact in the first-team as Hossam Ghaly. Sadly however, that impact was not a positive one. His disgust at being subbed off against Blackburn after coming on earlier in the game damaged his reputation amongst Spurs fans beyond repair and he never played for the club again.
