Tottenham tried to sign Anthony Martial in the summer from Manchester United – and his form since shows why they never stood a chance.
Manchester United forward Anthony Martial has been one of the Red Devils star performers this season, excelling even with limited minutes.
He had a mixed 2016/17 under Jose Mourinho, which led to Tottenham Hotspur attempting to sign him this summer.
The Independent reported Tottenham had a bid rejected by United for the France international.
It is easy to see why Spurs would want Martial. He is a fast paced, powerful and young attacker, built for the Premier League, who can play out wide and up front.
But their ‘efforts’ to sign him look increasingly desperate given the superb way in which Martial has begun the 2017/18 season.
The 21-year-old has scored five goals and provided four assists in nine matches, of which just four have been starts.
Martial is battling for a place in the side with Marcus Rashford, but manager Jose Mourinho is doing an exemplary job of giving both players a fair share of game time.
The forward has become such a key part of United’s gameplan that it seems laughable that Tottenham thought Mourinho would consider selling to a rival club.
Perhaps you can’t blame Tottenham for testing the waters, but without a truly staggering transfer bid, which did not materialise, they never stood a chance, and certainly do not now.
