Gareth Bale will forever be the one that got away for this Tottenham Hotspur side, albeit at a hefty world record price tag.
The brilliant Welshman was sold in 2013 to Real Madrid, but still shares a strong rapport with the club’s fans, who would love nothing more than to see him return one day.

With Tottenham moving into their new stadium for the 2018/19 season, there would be no better piece of business for the North London side, than to pull off a spectacular transfer and re-sign the attacker for it’s opening, to herald a new chapter in their history.
In Bale’s absence, Tottenham have created an outstanding side, but one lacking the clinical edge and a dynamism that a player at his elite level would bring, who could transform them into title winners.
Yet any long term aspirations they might have are now off, with reports via The BBC that Bale has extended his contract at Real Madrid until 2022.

This gives Madrid negotiating power, and with Cristiano Ronaldo likely to be phased out of the club in the next few seasons, Bale will become their main man.
Currently 27, by 2022, Bale will be 33, and should Tottenham bring him back at this point, he would no longer be at the peak of his powers.
Any attempt to re-sign the forward would have been resisted powerfully by Madrid, but it now appears to be out of the question.
When it comes to seeking a marquee signing for their new stadium in two years time, Spurs will have to look elsewhere. They can still aim high, but perhaps not to the very highest option.
