Southampton are reportedly interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur’s Kevin Wimmer in the summer transfer window.
According to a recent report in The Sun, Tottenham Hotspur are willing to sell Kevin Wimmer, but they want as much as £20 million for the defender.
Tottenham signed Wimmer from FC Koln in the summer of 2015 for a transfer fee reported by The Sun to be worth £4.3m.
Over the past two seasons, the 24-year-old centre-back has been able to make only 13 starts in the Premier League.
The defender, who has earned two caps for the Austria national football team, has not progressed over the past two seasons, and it is hard to see how his value could have gone from £4.3m to £20m during this period.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, though, is right to set the asking price at £20m; the English businessman’s stance is masterclass.
It is clear that Spurs are not going to get £20m for Wimmer; no club is going to pay that much money for a defender who has hardly played for two years.
What Levy is doing by placing a £20m price-tag on the defender is strengthening his negotiating position.
Interested clubs such as Southampton (The Mirror) will negotiate and try to bring the price down, but Tottenham could still get £10m or more and make a decent profit on a bit-part player.
After all, it is hard to see Spurs lowering their value of Wimmer from £20m to anything less than £10m.
If Southampton or any other interested club fail to come up with a suitable offer, then Tottenham will have retained the services of a talented and promising defender who could provide valuable cover.
It is a win-win situation for Tottenham.
