Whilst Fernando Llorente has struggled the Marseille man has proven himself a brilliant impact sub in France.

Once again last night Tottenham Hotspur’s Spanish striker Fernando Llorente failed to make an impact when given a chance at Spurs.

He missed a glaring opportunity in the FA Cup tie with Newport County, which Tottenham won 2-0, and is staring into the abyss regarding his Spurs career. He has managed to score just two goals since arriving from Swansea City in the summer and Tottenham fans are certainly not won over by his performances.

In fact, Spurs would probably be better if they had stuck by an attacking flop. Not Vincent Janssen, his stock has fallen even more since a loan move to Fenerbahce. Instead it is Clinton N’Jie they should have given a chance.

Spurs snapped up the Cameroonian attacker from Lyon in August 2015 for a fee reported by the Independent to be in the region of £12 million.

He struggled in his first season at Spurs, with injury trouble a major factor in his demise. Therefore he was loaned out to Marseille the following season, a deal that Tottenham were happy to make permanent in the summer.

But his form has improved this term. He has started just seven games in Ligue 1 this term for Marseille, playing in 13 games overall, and has scored six goals – a record which certainly looks superior next to Llorente’s return of one goal every ten games.

It is a big improvement on his form at Marseille last season, when he managed just four goals, and at 24-years-old he can only get better.

Tottenham would have been better off keeping the faith with N’Jie instead of bringing in Llorente in the summer.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing though. Llorente had scored 15 goals in the Premier League last term whilst N’Jie struggled out on loan. Tottenham made, on paper, the right call. It has just transpired that it was in fact wrong.
