Tottenham Hotspur wanted £17m Mirko Vucinic in 2013, now he is a free agent

The Montenegro international has recovered from his recent injury woes.

Tottenham Hotspur have again failed in their desire to provide Harry Kane with sufficient back-up in the striking department. After the disappointment of Vincent Janssen last season they let the Dutchman go and ended up signing Fernando Llorente from Swansea City.

However, the Spaniard has struggled to find success at the club and is still waiting for his first Tottenham goal. Spurs clearly need more striking options to help out the overworked Harry Kane, but signing players in January can be difficult and, more often than not, expensive.

But there is a bargain option available that Spurs themselves have previously been heavily linked with. In 2013 it was reported by numerous outlets, including the Daily Star, that Spurs wanted Juventus striker Mirko Vucinic. The reports claimed Tottenham would however have to cough up £17 million for the privilege. Such a fee proved a stumbling block for a player who was also linked with the club in 2009 – as reported by the Independent.

Now 34-years-old the striker is a free agent and is actively looking for a new club. He left Emirati club Al-Jazira earlier this year. His career with the club started off incredibly. He scored 25 goals in 23 games for the club in his first season at the club. Unfortunately, he picked up a serious knee injury in 2015 which ruled him out for the majority of his second season.

With doubts about his overall fitness ahead of his third campaign at the club and restrictions on foreign players Vucinic’s time was up and was let go. Despite being without a club for some time the veteran striker has still been playing internationally for Montenegro and is currently on the hunt for a new club – with Italy looking the most likely destination.

But given he would not be asked to play many minutes for Spurs and the impact he could have on a free transfer there is no doubt that Vucinic might be worth a roll of the dice.
