Tottenham Hotspur’s under-23 side were beaten by Derby County at the weekend.

The talented Spurs side boasted England youth international Marcus Edwards and Shayon Harrison, who has already featured for the first team.

Derby won the game 1-0 and under-23 coach Wayne Burnett was left feeling let down by the team.

He was very critical after the game of the team’s performance, telling the official club website: “There wasn’t an intensity to our game like there usually is and I’m very disappointed with the result, but more disappointed with the performance.

“The goal was a catalogue of errors. We’ve not got into our shape quick enough, not covered quick enough, we were too deep, people haven’t gone with their runners and if you don’t fulfil your responsibilities and do the basics on the pitch, you’re going to get punished and that’s what happened for the goal.

“I can’t keep talking about the same things week in, week out. It was not a good performance.”

Despite the talent in the club’s academy, Tottenham’s under-23 team have produced poor results this season.

They have won just two of nine matches, drawing two also, amassing eight points.

The team sits in eighth place out of 12 teams, and they are already 13 points behind early pace setters Liverpool.

Better is expected from Spurs with the talent at their disposal and Burnett will hope his harsh words can set the tone for a turning point for his team.
