There was a time during the summer when it looked like Tottenham Hotspur were going to kick off their transfer window by signing Nice winger Vincent Marcel.

The 20-year-old agreed personal terms with Tottenham in June according to Foot Mercato but a transfer to North London never materialised for the young talent.

Fast forward four months and Marcel must be disappointed that the move never worked out because not only are his reported suitors pulling up trees in the Premier League and Champions League, but it’s not going great for him back in France.

He got the season off to a flier by scoring an away goal in a third-round Champions League qualifier which eliminated Ajax from the preliminary stages and, with a couple of Ligue 1 cameos under his belt, things were going good.

But the France Under-20 international – who had brief and ineffective cameos in the playoff tie with Napoli – was suddenly banished to Nice B and two yellow cards and one red in six games for the reserves might suggest he’s not enjoying his demotion.

Being so young, Marcel, who has also scored once for Nice B, has plenty of time to turn things around but he isn’t going to play his way back on to Tottenham’s radar unless he sparks a turnaround in fortunes.
