Jose Enrique has said on Instagram that reported Tottenham Hotspur target and Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was the best player at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, not Lionel Messi.

The former Liverpool star was hugely impressed by Martinez, linked with a move to Antonio Conte’s Tottenham from Premier League rivals Villa.

The former Arsenal goalkeeper helped Argentina win the World Cup in Qatar.

Martinez was brilliant in goal in the final against France on Sunday evening.

The 30-year-old made a number of brilliant saves, especially in extra time, and also saved a penalty in the shootout.

Paris Saint-Germain forward Messi has officially been chosen as the best player at the World Cup.

However, according to Enrique, it is Martinez who was the best player at the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

Well-known and well-respected journalist Dean Jones told Give Me Sport this month that Martinez is among the goalkeepers that Tottenham are interested in signing and are keeping an eye on him.

Spurs reportedly want Martinez as a long-term successor to Hugo Lloris, who played in goal for France against Argentina in the final of the World Cup on Sunday evening.
