Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe to return to West Ham United in the summer?

With Defoe cutting a frustrated figure at Spurs of late, columnist Jake Lane believes he should pack his bags and head back to Upton Park at the end of the season.

West Ham United are riding high in the Championship and a win away to Blackpool last night saw them regain top-spot from Southampton.

If the Hammers are to bounce back to the Premier League, one man I believe Sam Allardyce needs to bring back to Upton Park is Tottenham Hotspur striker, Jermain Defoe.

The signing of Louis Saha from Everton on deadline day was seen by many as a surprise.

But after coming on as a substitute in his first game during the goalless draw against Liverpool, the very fact Harry Redknapp then decided to start him alongside Manchester City loanee Emmanuel Adebayor in the next game against Newcastle United.

This meant again leaving Defoe on the bench, suggests that the former Manchester United man will be used as more than just a squad player and perhaps at the expense of the England forward, who now faces seeing out the remainder of the season as third choice striker.

Although Defoe joined the ‘100 Club’ last season after bagging his century against West Bromwich Albion; by his own admission, 2010-2011 was all in all, a frustrating campaign and this season has again been one of mixed fortunes.

Early on, his partnership with Adebayor seemed to be working perfectly and was was finally bringing out the best in him and this was much to the relief of the Spurs supporters who had witnessed a lack of goals the previous season which saw them miss out on fourth place.

Slowly but surely this partnership began to wither and once again Defoe found himself a frustrated figure.

The fact that Adebayor and Saha grabbed three goals and five assists between them in their first game together doesn’t bode well for Defoe and could see him pushed to one side and not for the first time.

So he should head back to the club where he first made him name in the Premier League, West Ham United.
