Tottenham midfielders must show they can replace Mousa Dembele.

Mousa Dembele being on limited time at Tottenham Hotspur is no secret with his contract set to expire next June.

Dembele has even been linked with a January departure, with The Sun reporting he could move to China.

Whether it be sooner rather than later, Dembele’s likely exit means his Tottenham teammates must step up.

Spurs are not short of options in midfield, but it is time for one of them to prove they can be the main man.

Victor Wanyama and Harry Winks have had a worriedly troublesome past year with injuries, while Moussa Sissoko has failed to convince during his past two years at the club.

Tottenham need one of these players to show they can step up and replace Dembele.

In the case of Wanyama and Sissoko, if they fail to do so, they could be following Dembele out of the door.

Academy talent Winks has more rope as Spurs will not want to cast aside a homegrown prospect, but there are negative repercussions if he cannot re-establish himself.

Failure to become first choice will mean Tottenham have to consider bringing in fresh competition, making Winks’ task even harder.

Dembele’s likely exit provides an opportunity for Tottenham’s midfielders, but it also raises the stakes.
