Dele Alli held discussions with Liverpool before his move to Tottenham Hotspur.
Spurs star Dele Alli shared how close he came to joining Liverpool, before he made his move from MK Dons to White Hart Lane in February 2015, during a wide-ranging interview with BBC’S Football Focus.
The 20-year-old midfielder was a boyhood Liverpool fan, and attended a succession of recruitment meetings at Anfield.
Alli described a funny story about a time when he was due to meet the then Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, during his exclusive interview with BBC’s Football Focus:
Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard
“At the time when I was at MK Dons there was contact with Liverpool before I signed for Tottenham. But that was before we’d even spoke to Tottenham. I think it was six months before. We went up there and I think they knew that Steven Gerrard was my hero, so they said he was going to come down to meet me, but when I got there he was asleep apparently. I think he had a game the next day though so I understand.”
The Tottenham midfielder has gone on to establish himself as one of the Premier League’s best all-round midfielders, since his £5 million move from League One to England’s top flight.
Tottenham’s Dele Alli
And has racked up an impressive tally of 14 goals in 67 appearances for the Lilywhites during his fledgling career with the club.
He is actually exactly the kind of player who Liverpool need in their midfield.
The Spurs man has the ability to make well-timed runs into the opposition’s penalty box, can receive the ball in tight areas with ease, and has a tenacious, aggressive playing style, very similar to Gerrard himself.
Reds fans will now be left wondering, what might have happened, had their former captain managed to stay awake to meet Dele Alli!
