Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen has hit back at criticism of the club’s record in ‘big games’.

Spurs suffered defeat against Arsenal at the weekend, adding to losses to Manchester United and Chelsea earlier in the season.

To balance this out Spurs have beaten Liverpool, Real Madrid, and tonight’s opponents Borussia Dortmund.

Star man Eriksen believes the Liverpool game in particular shows that the criticism is overblown.

He said at a press conference reported by World Soccer Talk: “We have shown in the big games that we can compete.

“We beat Liverpool (4-1) at home for instance. People need to talk, they need to write.

“First it was ‘they’ll never win at Wembley’, but we don’t hear that any more.”

Tottenham certainly did shut down the early season narrative that Wembley was a hindrance to their season, although based on their performances at the stadium last season, the questions were fair to ask.

Spurs have shown that they can compete in big games and win their fair share, but their away record in big matches has been worrisome.

Under Mauricio Pochettino, Spurs have won just one of 18 matches against the Premier League’s top six away from home.

A win against Dortmund this week won’t count towards that statistic, but it will help support Eriksen’s argument.
