Tottenham Hotspur shouldn’t part ways with the out-of-form Dutchman.
According to The Mirror, German outfit Borussia Monchengladbach are willing to offer Vincent Janssen an escape route at Tottenham Hotspur.
The 23-year-old endured a very poor first season at Spurs following a £17 million move from AZ Alkmaar, netting six goals across 38 appearances in all competitions but four of those were from the penalty spot.
He was, in his defence, playing second fiddle to perhaps the world’s finest number nine in Harry Kane, so regular starts were not always on offer. Janssen certainly looks like a flop at the moment – but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy shouldn’t cash in after one season.
The reason he fetched so much money last summer is because Janssen netted 30 goals in 42 starts for the Dutch outfit and it is obvious he knows where the goal is.
Of course, being a prolific striker in the Netherlands means very little regarding your capacity to reproduce those goalscoring heroics in the Premier League and there are plenty of cautionary tales to support this idea.
Nevertheless, it is worth remembering that Janssen, who also has seven goals in 12 appearances for the Netherlands, is only 23. There is so much time for him to improve and his goalscoring record at Alkmaar is far too impressive to ignore.
He is nowhere near as good as Kane, but very few in this world are at the moment and he does not need to be as lethal as his team-mate – he just needs to be reliable enough to do a job for Tottenham when they need him.
If he has any ambition then he won’t be happy playing behind Kane for the next few years in North London, but a far better showing next season would give him far better options when it comes to perhaps moving on in the summer.
No disrespect to Borussia Monchengladbach but bigger clubs will look at him if he shows big improvement next term.
Plus, Spurs are a lot more likely to receive a much higher fee next summer if he can put a tough first season behind him and kick on. Staying in North London for another year makes sense for him and Tottenham. There is too much potential there.
