Tottenham Hotspur should still hold advantage in the race to sign Matthijs De Ligt

Tottenham Hotspur are said to be competing with Manchester City for the Ajax defender’s signature.

According to a report on the Telegraph, Manchester City have joined the race for Ajax defender Matthijs De Ligt.

Tottenham Hotspur have been heavily linked with De Ligt recently, but now could have to do battle with the Premier League champions.

Spurs are said by The Sun to be prepared to pay £50 million for the young centre-back – a figure which City would have no trouble matching.

Pep Guardiola’s side would also be able to pay a bigger salary than Spurs.

However, Tottenham may still hold the advantage in the race for the centre-back.

Spurs can show De Ligt that there is a clear path of progression for him, if he joins them, by highlighting the progress that Davinson Sanchez has made.

Sanchez was brought to Spurs from Ajax last term, and he has immediately been thrown into their first-team.

Sanchez has been one of Mauricio Pochettino’s side’s most consistent players – and Spurs only need to show De Ligt how well his former teammate has done to make the move seem more appealing.

At City, on the other hand, De Ligt would have huge competition for a place at centre-back.

And Spurs may still hold the edge in the battle to sign the youngster, if he is placing his own development over monetary gains.
