Should Tottenham Hotspur move for the out-of-favour Arsenal man?
The Sun reported on the weekend that Tottenham Hotspur are drawing up a shortlist of potential replacements for goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
The report claims that the Frenchman could quit Spurs – three points off the top four – if they do not qualify for the Champions League again next season.
Jordan Pickford and Joe Hart were mentioned by The Sun, but Mauricio Pochettino could find a suitable replacement without leaving North London.
Arsenal are vulnerable to losing David Ospina in the summer as the South American stopper looks set to endure another season as Petr Cech’s understudy.
The 28-year-old’s performance in the 1-1 draw away to Paris Saint-Germain in September was a reminder that he is indeed a very fine goalkeeper, but the reality is that he is waiting for a player of Cech’s calibre to be dropped and it seems unlikely.
He was outstanding when he deputised for his injured team-mate in the second half of last season, but Arsene Wenger rewarded that series of fine displays by dropping him as soon as the 34-year-old returned – a move which will frustrated and maybe even hurt the Colombian.
He is there for the taking, but would they sell to Tottenham?
It’s a huge no-no in principle, but Arsenal’s morals went out the window when Wenger sold one of the club’s finest ever goalscorers to Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United. He wouldn’t discriminate against Spurs in the name of honour if the money was right.
Ospina would have two years to go on his contract next summer and bringing him across to White Hart Lane could well be a masterstroke by Pochettino.
Not only would Tottenham be signing a quality goalkeeper – one who simply needs a chance – but it would also represent a massive V sign with the fingers to their bitter North London rivals.
