Tottenham Hotspur should keep tabs on Harry Maguire amid Toby Alderweireld contract concern

Key defender Toby Alderweireld has yet to sign a new contract at Tottenham Hotspur.

As the London Evening Standard reports, Tottenham Hotspur were taking an interest in Harry Maguire this summer before the defender joined Leicester City.

While Spurs will be delighted with the centre-back they did sign – Davinson Sanchez – Maguire has been very impressive in his early days at the King Power Stadium.

The 24-year-old’s form for the Foxes, on the back of his admirable efforts in Hull City’s relegation campaign, has seen him handed his first England caps by Gareth Southgate.

Tottenham’s back three is as good as any in Europe as it stands, but there is reason to be fearful over the future of Toby Alderweireld, arguably the crown jewel of that defence.

The Belgian claimed to The Sun in October that he has yet to be offered a new deal by Tottenham as he seeks improved terms on his contract, which runs until 2020.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is not the type of chairman to let contracts wind down and may enforce the sale of Alderweireld next summer if terms have not been agreed.

Should Spurs reluctantly lose the 28-year-old, they could do worse than to revive their interest in Maguire, who is showing that he has the potential to reach the top level.

Maguire combines strong and robust defending with the type of ball-carrying ability that Mauricio Pochettino likes in his centre-backs, and could play in a back two or three.
