Tottenham's Kevin Wimmer looks dejected

Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Wimmer told Kleine Zeitung that he is frustrated over a lack of first-team chances in North London.

The Austrian centre-back claims that he will analyse his future in comments which should worry Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Having failed to manage a single minute of Premier League football this season, it’s a headache that Pochettino will have been expecting, but the Argentine needs to find a solution which does not involve Wimmer leaving in January.

It’s easy to forget, but the wheels would have probably come off Spurs’ season long before they did last term if not for Wimmer, who proved a superb deputy for Jan Vertonghen over the course of 10 Premier League games.

He has proven himself a very able centre-back in the Premier League and such players are not easy to find.

Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld are a fine pair, conceding once from open play in the league this season, but what happens if one of them misses a few months?

Cameron Carter-Vickers might be the next big thing, but for now he is an 18-year-old who has never played a Premier League match. Eric Dier is also an option, but a better one than Wimmer? It’s debatable.

What isn’t debatable is that Vertonghen and Alderweirled are not machines, regardless of how it looks at times. They can get injured, and if one of them does in the second half of the season then Wimmer has shown that he can do a job.

Pochettino’s an excellent man-manager, and he must use those skills to convince Wimmer to stick it out until the summer at least. By then, his first-team prospects could be very, very different.
