Tottenham face an uphill battle to sign Leon Goretzka.

Tottenham’s hopes of signing Leon Goretzka are looking slim after Schalke made the midfielder a record offer to stay at the club.
Schalke are not giving up on losing him easily, and have put together a lucrative financial offer to convince him to stay put.

There is a little hope for interested clubs, with it proposed that Goretzka’s contract would include a double-digit release clause.
For Tottenham though this may not help.
The salary offered to Goretzka would be more than Tottenham could offer with their strict wage structure, although rivals Arsenal will still consider themselves contenders.
This would mean even if Spurs wanted to pay his release clause in the future, Goretzka may have to take a pay cut, and be less likely to want to join.
The 22-year-old midfielder is an ideal replacement for Mousa Dembele at Tottenham, but they are likely to going to have to look elsewhere.
