Erik Lamela has won the Puskas Award for his goal against Arsenal.

The Argentine may have scored his goal way back in March 2021, but despite there being nine months in the year for someone to outdo Lamela’s strike, nobody could.

It’s always hard to predict the winner of the Puskas Award, especially in the moment. After all, some absolutely ridiculous goals have failed to win the award – just look at Patrik Schick’s strike against Scotland this year.

However, despite the fact it is notoriously hard to forecast who will win this award, Jan Vertonghen managed to pick out Lamela as his winner pretty much as soon as the ball hit the back of the net.

Vertonghen’s tweet resurfaced after Lamela was confirmed as the winner of this prestigious trophy, and Tottenham have even posted about the Belgian centre-halves incredible foresight.

Spurs noted that Vertonghen called it, and to be fair to him, he was absolutely spot on with this prediction.

To be fair, Lamela was a worthy winner this year. His strike was in one of the biggest games of the season and he used an incredibly unorthodox technique to caress the ball into the bottom corner.

Vertonghen’s prediction was accurate, and goals scored for Tottenham have now won back-to-back Puskas awards after Heung-Min Son was given the accolade for his strike against Burnley in 2019 – the last time the award was given out.
