Tottenham reportedly fancy Roger Schmidt as their new manager if Antonio Conte leaves and he once admitted being inspired by Jurgen Klopp.

Spurs have to put up with rumours about Conte’s future every week.

Win, lose or draw, there are always rumours surrounding Conte leaving Tottenham; it’s usually either to return to Italy with Juventus or because of some perceived notion that Spurs can’t give him what he wants.

We personally can’t see Conte leaving Tottenham any time soon but Spurs may be wise to have contingency plans in case the worst happens.

Tottenham reportedly fancy Roger Schmidt

One name mentioned in that sense is Roger Schmidt.

SportItalia reporter Rudy Galetti claimed on Thursday that Tottenham have made Benfica boss Rudy Galetti their ‘Plan B’ if Conte goes.

Schmidt is enjoying a remarkable start to the season and has yet to lose a single game with Benfica; 19 wins and three assists in 22 games.

Benfica even topped their Champions League group, which featured both Paris Saint-Germain and Benfica.

Schmidt loves to attack and boasted 69 wins in 104 games in charge of PSV Eindhoven before making his move to Portugal over the summer.

Formerly of Red Bull Salzburg, Bayer Leverkusen and Beijing Guoan, Schmidt’s reputation is arguably at its highest point now.

The 55-year-old German would be a fascinating appointment for Tottenham and a clear change in style from Conte.

If Schmidt did end up at Tottenham any time soon, he would join fellow German coach Jurgen Klopp in the Premier League.

When Schmidt was being linked with English clubs way back in 2016, he told The Mirror that he thinks Klopp is a ‘good inspiration’ for him.

Schmidt added that he likes Klopp’s ‘active style of football’, believing it’s ‘brave’ and ‘very aggressive’.

Whilst Conte is a winner, some haven’t been all that impressed with his style of play – especially after the Mauricio Pochettino era.

Schmidt may not be Klopp but he could bring real excitement to Tottenham if he does end up being Conte’s replacement one day.
