Spurs signed Pau Lopez on loan, but he didn’t feature for the club last season.

Tottenham Hotspur have called off any attempt to sign Pau Lopez, according to reports in Spain.

The Spaniard was signed on loan from Espanyol last summer. Mauricio Pochettino was a fan of his from his time managing the Barcelona club and decided to bring him in.

Now, according to Sport, negotiations are over regarding a permanent transfer. Espanyol rejected an initial £1.75m offer for the Spaniard, coming way under the £6 million buy-clause they had agreed as part of the loan deal. Now negotiations appear to have come to an end.

Lopez seemed an odd signing in the first place. He was always going to struggle to get ahead of Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm in the Tottenham pecking order. He ended up playing no games for Spurs and it appears he never will.

It is very similar to a transfer North London rivals Arsenal made back in 2013.

Italian goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano signed for Arsenal on loan back in September 2013. The deal included a buying option but he never made an impact for the Gunners.

Viviano played a grand total of zero games in his one season at Arsenal and left the club in the summer of 2014 to return to Italy.

It was a surprise move in the first place and one which did not really benefit anyone.

He has since gone on to star at Sampdoria and his Arsenal move remains something of a mystery, just like Lopez’s will now look at Tottenham Hotspur.
