Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly willing to invest in the January transfer window.
It’s fair to say that the bulk of Tottenham Hotspur’s signings last summer have not had the desired impact at White Hart Lane.
The likes of Georges Kevin N’Koudou and Vincent Janssen have not hit top gear at Spurs yet, and there are already question marks over their futures.
Tottenham have taken gambles on a number of players, only for them to have limited impacts in recent times.
While they have been success stories with the likes of Dele Alli and Eric Dier, there have also been major failures in the form of Federico Fazio, Benjamin Stambouli and Clinton Njie.
Worryingly for Spurs, N’Koudou and Janssen look like they may have to added to the list of flops that Mauricio Pochettino has brought to White Hart Lane during his time at the North London club.
However, Spurs are not necessarily shopping in the wrong market and Daniel Levy has to take his fair portion of the blame for their struggles in the transfer market.
Pochettino has identified two targets who would surely have been wonderful additions for Spurs, only for them not to be brought to White Hart Lane due to Levy’s hesitancy.
Tottenham pulled out of a deal to sign Moussa Dembele from Fulham last January, and that looks to be a major error.
Spurs would have only had to pay £5 million for Dembele (Daily Mail), had they loaned him back to Fulham, but they avoided doing so and the striker has gone on to be a revelation for Celtic.
Dembele’s price tag would now be inflated well above the £5 million bracket, and Spurs look to have missed out on a quality striker and the potential to make huge profit.
The Lilywhites did not learn from this error last summer. Tottenham’s scouts felt that Wilfried Zaha would have been a valuable addition – as they spotted the talent that the Crystal Palace winger had (Daily Mail).
Zaha reportedly wanted the move to Spurs, but Levy was not willing to pay Palace’s asking price and submitted a £12 million offer, in an attempt to secure the skilful winger on the cheap.
Palace rejected the offer instantly, and Zaha has flourished this season at Selhurst Park – becoming one of the most dangerous wingers in the Premier League.
Tottenham’s chances of landing Zaha now appear to be slim, meaning they may have missed out on another player who would have boosted their chances of claiming a Champions League qualification spot.
If a similar opportunity arises in January, Levy should now not hesitate in backing his manager. Pochettino has proven he is worthy of trust, and Spurs must do all they can to get his top targets, otherwise they run the risk completing an unwanted hat-trick of missed chances.
