Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino needs to loan out Josh Onomah.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin will get the headlines after scoring the goal which clinched the Under-20 World Cup for England in South Korea on Sunday.
But Tottenham Hotspur starlet Josh Onomah was the real star of the show.
The 20-year-old posted a commanding performance in the middle of the park and Tottenham fans are rightly excited about their academy product – especially after he rattled the crossbar from the guts of 30 yards with a ferocious effort.
There will be a lot of Spurs supporters hoping to see Onomah – who started three matches last season, none in the Premier League or Champions League – get more chances next season, but manager Mauricio Pochettino should loan him out.
Pochettino has mainly used the youngster on the wing, but if his performances in South Korea are evidence of anything it’s that his future lies in central midfield.
He looked uncannily similar to Mousa Dembele and if Pochettino was watching then the Argentine must surely wonder whether he must bring him infield a little bit – but that’s in the long term.
In the short term, Onomah must be loaned out. He’s nowhere near good enough as a winger to compete for a first XI spot, and the competition in central midfield is far too fierce.
Pochettino boasts such midfield options as Dembele, Victor Wanyama and Eric Dier. The reality is that he will, like last season, spend the 2017-18 campaign on the bench and at his age he needs games.
He might be a world champion, but the Premier League is of a much higher standard than what he has known for the past two weeks.
The potential is obviously there but it is too early for him to breakthrough at Tottenham.
