Tottenham striker is coming towards the end of his contract.
Fernando Llorente’s excellent recent form has thrown his future at the club back into question.
The Spanish striker’s contract is up at the end of the season and he is yet to be offered another one.
Llorente has outperformed expectations after stepping in for Harry Kane.
He was quoted by The Evening Standard he is open to staying put. He said: “If I renew for a year, I am delighted, the project is exciting here at Tottenham, but we will be attentive to any call that may come.”
Despite his recent form, Tottenham must consider being ruthless and cutting ties with Llorente this summer.
Llorente turns 34 next week and he is likely to go backwards rather than improve.
Can he maintain his current form into next year, or is this his last hurrah at the top level?
Tottenham should not take the gamble, and instead move in a different direction.
Spotrac report Llorente earns £75,000 per week at Tottenham on his current deal.
Tottenham need a new striker to back up or play off Harry Kane, and while Llorente has filled in well, it’s time the club looked at signing a younger player.
If Spurs are in this same situation next season with Kane injured, and Llorente cannot replicate this season’s form, it will not be a surprise.
Renewing Llorente may appeal to the board as it would save them a transfer fee. Supporters won’t be fooled.
