Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks produced a mature performance as Spurs earned a 1-1 draw against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday night.
The 21-year-old is a product of Spurs’ youth system, and he is very highly rated at the north London club.
Mauricio Pochettino even compared his playing style with Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta, and while only time will tell whether he can take his game to that level, his performance against Madrid justifies the hype.
Obviously, the European champions are expected to control the midfield especially with the wealth of talent they have in Luka Modric, Casemiro and Toni Kroos.
However, Winks was equally brilliant. He was tidy in possession, played long balls when required, and put in defensive shifts as well. He has shown maturity beyond years.
He has made one tackle, two interceptions, two clearances, and a blocked effort – it shows how good he was with defensive contributions.
Winks made 45 passes, more than any other Spurs player on the pitch, and maintained an enviable 91.1% accuracy, that included eight accurate long passes out of nine attempted, according to whoscored.com.
Stats are not often the best parameter to judge the quality of a player. The precision, intelligence, and energy with which he carried on throughout the game is remarkable.
The manner in which he controlled the Spurs midfield shows that here is a player with tremendous potential, and that he could become a world class player in the future.
