Moussa Sissoko is hopeful of making France’s squad but taking nothing for granted.
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Moussa Sissoko once again made it into France’s World Cup squad despite spending most of 2018 on the bench for his club.
Sissoko though has admitted to French newspaper L’Equipe he is not taking his selection for granted.
The midfielder is a favourite of Didier Deschamps and is a regular for Les Bleus despite their huge strength in depth and his indifferent role at Tottenham.
Sissoko played regularly for Spurs in the first half of the season but since Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama have overcome their injury struggles, he has barely featured.
He has started their FA Cup games, including the quarter-final win over Swansea City, but Sissoko’s last Premier League start came in January in their 1-1 draw against Southampton.
Sissoko was asked by L’Equipe about missing the tournament, and was described as the ‘best player of Euro 2016’, referring to the performances at the tournament which helped clinch a move to Spurs.
He said he will accept his fate whatever is decided: “I do not have the answer. I do my job on the pitch and I try to bring my maximum.
“The coach will make his choices, I will accept them.
“But for the moment, when I played, everything went very well. I have always been good with Les Blues so I hope it will continue.”
Sissoko will be hoping his FA Cup selection maintains and he gets a chance against Manchester United in the semi-final.
This will help keep him in the spotlight and enhance his prospects of making it to Russia.
He is very much trusted by Didier Deschamps, but France have so many options, Sissoko’s lack of league football makes it an easy call to leave him out if need be.
