Luis Enrique is the leading contender to become Tottenham Hotspur manager – just months after Mauricio Pochettino praised him.
It looks like Antonio Conte’s time as Tottenham boss is coming to an end.
The Italian doesn’t have all that many supporters left at Spurs after Wednesday’s meek 0-0 draw with AC Milan, which knocked Tottenham out of the Champions League.
Tottenham do have an option to extend Conte’s contract by another year but that doesn’t look likely to happen now.
Tottenham want something new but, in the same breath, they want something they have already experienced.
By that, we mean Mauricio Pochettino; the former Spurs boss finds himself out of a job and is the overwhelming favourite with fans to become Tottenham manager again.
Fabio Paratici may just have other plans though with a key manager at the top of his wish list…
Luis Enrique is a top choice for Tottenham job
The Athletic report that Luis Enrique is likely to be top of Paratici’s wish list for the job and he is already emerging as a leading contender.
The Spaniard is out of management at the moment having left his post as Spain boss following the World Cup.
Enrique plays a very attractive brand of football and would arrive as a former Champions League winner with Barcelona.
The 52-year-old would be an interesting appointment for Spurs but he wouldn’t be Pochettino.
There isn’t that emotional pull to Enrique and you almost fear a little for a new Spurs manager if it isn’t Pochettino; the feeling towards him is just that strong in some sections.
Still, Pochettino himself is a fan of Enrique.
Pochettino told AS in November that he thinks he thinks Enrique is a ‘great coach’ and believed he has impressed in all his managerial jobs.
Pochettino noted that Ivan de la Pena – his friend from their time at Espanyol – speaks highly of Enrique, whilst praising his work on the pitch and in the media.
Enrique would seemingly have Pochettino’s backing for the job and we could end up seeing Tottenham consider both.
Do Tottenham go back to their former boss or try something new? That’s a tough question but Paratici may well fancy Enrique over the Argentinian.
