Tottenham Hotspur defender Matt Doherty has found life tough in North London of late, but he’s earning rave reviews for Ireland.
Even before Emerson Royal came in, Doherty was stuck behind Japhet Tanganga in the right back race at Tottenham.
Antonio Conte is now in as manager, and Doherty may be able to play in his more natural positions of right wing back.
That’s certainly where he has been playing for Ireland in this international break, turning in a couple of strong displays.
The 29-year-old helped Ireland keep a clean sheet in the 0-0 draw with Portugal on Thursday.
On Sunday, Doherty was instrumental in a 3-0 win over Luxembourg.
Doherty is now earning praise for his performance on Sunday night having impressed many in Ireland.
Off The Ball gave Doherty a 7 out of 10 for his display against Luxembourg, offering huge praise in the process.

“For someone who is not playing at club level, Doherty’s energy for 90 minutes is very impressive. He is proving himself to be Ireland’s best player in most games,” they said.
Doherty has been in real danger of becoming a forgotten man at Tottenham.
If he doesn’t thrive under Conte, Doherty will surely be on the way out of Spurs.
This international form is a great sign for Doherty, and let’s hope Spurs fans can see it soon too.
