Tottenham Hotspur dominated a weak looking Reading side during a 3-1 win at the Madejski Stadium in Berkshire. Despite the inferior performance of their opponents credit must go to Spurs for the way they played with several players performing with distinction. They took the lead when Gylfi Sigurdsson split the Reading defence in half with an exquisite through ball which Aaron Lennon cut back for Jermain Defoe to finish from inside the area.
The second goal came via a fluffed effort from Gareth Bale that deceived Reading stopper Alex McCarthy after good work by Kyle Walker down the right. The third goal came via the man-of-the-match Jermain Defoe as his pace terrorised first Kaspars Gorkss, then Alex Pearce and Chris Gunter before firing past McCarthy for an unassailable lead. The only blips on the game were Defoe’s inability to score a deserved hat-trick and Hal Robson-Kanu’s acrobatic finish after Adam Le Fondre had managed to lob Brad Friedel.
The chase for Ganso appears to be over after the Brazilian looks set to stay in Brazil with a switch to Sao Paolo from Santos. Many a European club has reportedly chased the Brazilian starlet but now he appears set to stay in his homeland in a deal believed to be worth $11 million US dollars. Spurs may continue their chase for Joao Moutinho in light of these revelations.
Jan Vertonghen would have endeared himself even more to the Tottenham faithful by announcing he turned down Arsenal in order to sign on at The Lane this summer. The Belgian international arrived from Ajax in July and said he ignored advice from Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp over a potential move to The Emirates; instead he was swayed by Daniel Levy’s patter and the words of Rafael Van Der Vaart who he knew from their Ajax days. RVDV has since moved on to Hamburg but the 25-year-old insists he is very happy at Tottenham.
Spurs left-back Danny Rose has told journalists in Sunderland that he wished to make his current loan deal at the club permanent in January.
He is quoted in the Sunderland Echo as saying: “If there was a chance that I could move here permanently, I’d snatch it with both hands. Nothing has been said of that kind. I’m just here on loan for the season and anything after that would be a bonus.’’ Rose is currently on a season long loan at the Stadium of Light.
Kyle Naughton is set for an extended spell with the first team after Benoit Assou-Ekotto suffered an injury at the weekend which will keep him out for the month. Danny Rose had previously been the back-up left-back. Naughton spent last season on loan with Norwich.
Brad Friedel has sought to play down any controversy over the arrival of Hugo Lloris to compete for his goalkeeping jersey, saying he welcomes the ‘healthy’ competition, adding that his rival is a ‘nice person.’
