All the news and gossip from Tottenham Hotspur in the last 24 hours.
It has emerged today that Tottenham boss Andre Villas Boas applied to the vacant Burnley manager job before the role was given to Owen Coyle. At that point the Portuguese was overachieving at lowly Academica and sent off a very impressive CV and personal statement highlighting his objective and vision for the club. However it was a language barrier that denied him the opportunity of managing at Turf Moor. Despite a fluent English speaker his jargon confused the party in charge of appointing him and they doubted the players would understand the intricate systems he wished to install. Brian Laws was appointed instead.
Tottenham’s young centre back scored for England Under-21s last night. Steven Caulker got on the end of a Jonjo Shelvey free kick to give England the lead over Azerbaijan in Baku. He has created a habit of scoring at this level and he impressed throughout the game as he aims to push for a starting place under AVB after an impressive season on loan at Swansea last term.
Tottenham have confirmed the departure of David Bentley to Russian side FC Rostov on a short term loan deal until January. The big money signing from Blackburn Rovers has struggled since arriving at Spurs despite memorable moments such as the wonder goal produced in a 4-4 draw with North London rivals Arsenal. He is now hoping to gain first team football in the Russian Premier League.
Tottenham reportedly made a very late bid to sign Alvaro Negredo from Sevilla for £20 million. The Spanish international was considered as a replacement for long term target Leandro Damiao who decided to remain in Brazil for the immediate future. Sevilla intimated however that such a late bid was never going to be accepted and that Negredo was more than happy to remain in Spain.
Hugo Lloris has dismissed any claims about his Tottenham future before even kicking a ball at the London club. The £8 million signing from Lyon now faces a fight for the number 1 spot with American Brad Friedel after AVB insisted the number 1 spot was not assured for the Frenchman. Lloris however claims he has not thought of the comments and is only focused on Frances World Cup Qualifier with Finland.
Meanwhile Clint Dempsey has revealed how the transfer furore surrounding him this season almost brought him to tears. He was upset about leaving Craven Cottage whilst also upset at the way he was portrayed to have gone on strike but now admits he cannot wait to get his Spurs career underway.
