Right-back Kyle Walker has moved on from the weekend’s defeat and is already focusing on Thursday’s Europa League tie against Maribor at White Hart Lane. The defender has brushed aside ‘jibes’ about the competition from rival supporters, insisting the club are proud and focused on winning the trophy come May. Spurs are still seeking their first win in the competition after three successive draws, but three points this week would put them in a strong position.
The Independent are reporting exciting news for Spurs fans that the club are targeting Dutch striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar in January for a knock down £7 million. He is yet to sign a new contract with Schalke, and there are a number of clubs vying for his signature, and the Germans will be tempted to cash in during the next transfer window rather than risk losing him for nothing next summer. He is currently taking on Tottenham’s rivals Arsenal tonight in the Champions League.
It is considerably more impressive than the Mail’s story that Andy Carroll is wanted by Tottenham. The paper reported last night that Spurs want to sign the Liverpool owned forward in January, a big shock to supporters and not necessarily a pleasant one. However because Carroll is currently on loan at West Ham, it was pointed out by several supporters that a player cannot be registered with three clubs within a season under FIFA rules. Since then the Mail have heavily edited their story with the headline that Spurs are ‘monitoring Carroll with a view to a move next summer’. Hmmm… As we joked this morning, has Damien Comolli been rehired placed back in charge of transfers at the Lane?
Another player unlikely to end up at Spurs, who was linked earlier in the week is Ryan Shawcross. The centre-back had been suggested as a target for several clubs, but Stoke want to offer him an incredible six-year contract to stay at the Britannia.
Tottenham’s impressive youngsters face their toughest challenge yet tomorrow when they travel to Spain to take on Barcelona. The game will take place in the 15,000 stadium in the shadow of the Nou Camp, and is a great opportunity for the young players. Spurs are second in the NextGen Series group, with Barcelona top after winning 2-0 at White Hart Lane earlier this season.
On the theme of young talent at the club, AVB has praised Tom Carroll and Ryan Mason for their showings during the opportunities they have had this season, and has stated he is not afraid to call on them as injuries pile up. Carroll has played in the last two games, and the boss has also said he is monitoring the progress of teenager Adam Smith, on a short-term loan at Millwall.
