Tottenham Hotspur wanted to sign Jimmy-Jay Morgan but have ended up watching the youngster sign for London rivals Chelsea instead.

That’s according to The Athletic, who claim that Spurs were trying to bring Morgan to North London.

Tottenham registered their interest in a deal last summer, as did Premier League rivals Leeds United.

However, Tottenham weren’t able to prise Morgan away from Southampton and have now ended up missing out.

Chelsea have completed the signing of Morgan, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that the deal is worth up to £6million.

A number of add-ons would have to be activated to reach that price but Chelsea clearly see huge potential in Morgan.

It’s added that Morgan wants to play at the highest level and didn’t see that happening at Southampton.

Morgan would have even preferred to learn from Chelsea coaches than play regularly in the Championship next season.

Missing out is a blow for Tottenham, though they did snap up a Chelsea talent on deadline day with Jude Soonsup-Bell heading to Spurs.

Chelsea new boy Jimmy-Jay Morgan is highly rated

Morgan hasn’t yet featured in a Chelsea shirt having sustained a knee injury just before his move to West London.

The 17-year-old has shown enormous potential with four goals and five assists in eight Premier League 2 games this season.

Primarily a striker who can also play out wide, Morgan is being backed for a big future.

Hailed as ‘wonderful’ by former former Saints boss Nathan Jones, Morgan had been in first-team training at Southampton before joining Chelsea.

The hope is that Morgan will now become a star for Chelsea and emerge as the next great success story out of the Southampton ranks.

That won’t be any comfort for Tottenham, who – outside of Arsenal – couldn’t have picked a worse destination for Morgan given their rivalry.
