Tottenham Hotspur reportedly attempted to nab Jadon Sancho, who has been linked with Celtic, from Manchester City.

Manchester City didn’t splash out £200 million to construct the world renowned Etihad academy campus only for their most talented youngsters to leave the club. Therefore, its little surprise that City are determined to hang onto Jadon Sancho this summer.

According to The Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur tried in vain to include the 17-year-old as part of the world record deal that took Kyle Walker to Manchester for £53 million.

And the Daily Mail reported in April that City were so desperate to keep the winger at the club that they were willing to offer him a bumper three-year deal with a huge pay rise.

Therefore, it’s fair to say that Celtic would be pulling off a major coup if they were able to lure Sancho to Glasgow. The Sun (page 63, April 21st) claimed that the Scottish champions were keen to land the youngster on loan this summer.

And, with the club apparently still on the lookout for a replacement for Patrick Roberts, himself a young player aiming to make his mark at City, Sancho could be the perfect addition.

Earning the Golden Player award at the European Under-17 Championship in Croatia this summer, there’s little doubting his credentials. And the fact Sancho caught the attention of Spurs, a club who pride themselves on compiling Europe’s most exciting young players, speaks volumes about his vast, untapped potential.

At just 17 years of age, you wonder whether a loan move to Celtic would even be beneficial. Is he too young, too raw to break into Rodgers’ first-team over a period of just 12 months.

Yet, it appears that age is but a number for a player of Sancho’s quality. And, as Rodgers has shown throughout his managerial career, he is willing to give young players the chance.
