Tony Cascarino claimed Liverpool’s Simon Mignolet is better than Hugo Lloris.
Tony Cascarino might not have expected his comments on Hugo Lloris to attract quite as much criticism as they have over the past 24 hours.
Lloris made an error against Chelsea at the weekend, but the snap reaction is harsh.

He is the type of goalkeeper Liverpool have been crying out for ever since Pepe Reina lost form and was sold.
Mignolet has failed to convince, and is only still number one after supposed replacement Loris Karius flopped in his debut season in the Premier League.
Perhaps that too is a little harsh on the Belgian international, but to suggest like Cascarino did that he is superior to Lloris is a misjudgement.

You would be hard pressed to find a Liverpool fan who would not trade Mignolet for Lloris with Tottenham in a straight swap.
Lloris is an experienced international with big tournament experience who provides calmness for his back four. Last season Spurs had the best defensive record in the Premier League, and he was a key part of that.
Liverpool’s defence has long been their weakness, and the goalkeeping situation has been a contributing factor.
| Saves per game | Errors Lead To Goal | Passing Accuracy | Goals Conceded per game | Appearances | Mins Played | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hugo Lloris | 2.29 | 2 | 72% | 0.71 | 34 | 3,005 |
| Simon Mignolet | 1.89 | 1 | 62% | 1.07 | 28 | 2,520 |
In 2016/17 Mignolet made one more goal costing error than Lloris, and made fewer saves per game than the Frenchman.
Make no mistake, pardon the pun, Hugo Lloris is a hero for Tottenham despite the weekend. Liverpool would be lucky to have him.
