Tottenham Hotspur need to switch to 3-5-2.

Tottenham Hotspur benefitted from Fernando Llorente’s introduction to turn the game against PSV Eindhoven last night.

Llorente has repeatedly shown himself incapable of filling in for Harry Kane, but last night was a sign he can benefit the England striker by playing alongside him.

Prior to Llorente’s introduction Kane struggled to make an impact and had to drop too deep to get involved.

For a striker who has had little rest for the past two seasons, asking him to play as a lone frontman is not putting him in the best position to succeed.

He needs a strike partner and Llorente showed he can help.

The best way for Spurs to accommodate them both is to play 3-5-2, a formation which served them well early last season especially away to Real Madrid.

With an away game to Barcelona on the horizon, now could be the time to revert to the formation.

Playing three at the back can benefit full-back Kieran Trippier, who has struggled in recent weeks defensively, and give him greater license to go forward.

Playing a back three would give Spurs greater opportunity to give the talented but inexperienced Juan Foyth games, with two centre-backs alongside him.

Bringing Llorente on alongside Kane may have been an experiment, a desperate measure, but it could provide Spurs with the best method for success between now and January.
