Tottenham Hotspur decided to back out of their pursuit of Ajax defender Mattijs De Ligt earlier this summer after showing an interest in the Dutch international.

The Evening Standard had reported in May that Spurs hoped to win the race for the £50 million rated centre-back, eyeing him as a replacement for Toby Alderweireld.

Keeping Alderweireld meant there was no need to splash out. At the same time Tottenham have had a real stroke of luck over talented star De Ligt.

The good news for Tottenham is that De Ligt has remained with Ajax, and that none of the European giants linked with his signature managed to lure him away.

Talksport reported Juventus were keen, with Barcelona and Bayern Munich both also interested, according to The Mail.

The Guardian claimed Manchester City were considering signing De Ligt as a long term replacement for Vincent Kompany.

Tottenham will feel fortunate that one of their reported top transfer targets remains on the market despite their decision to step back this summer.

Spurs have had success buying with Ajax in the past and De Ligt could have felt comfortable joining the North London club.

Still only 19, De Ligt can further enhance his reputation and show teams what they are missing when he partners Virgil Van Dijk on international duty for the Netherlands during this month’s break.
