Glenn Hoddle claims 28-year-old Spurs player is about to get even better in next couple of years

Glenn Hoddle has praised Eric Dier and thinks the Tottenham Hotspur defender has his best times ahead of him in the next couple of years.

Dier has been through many ups and downs during his time at Tottenham.

Some will remember him starting out as a right back before moving into midfield to great effect under Mauricio Pochettino.

Dier then started to struggle in midfield and playing as a centre back in a four-man defence under Jose Mourinho didn’t get him back on track.

Antonio Conte has been playing Dier in the middle of his back three though, bringing the best out of the former Sporting man once again.

Dier is pretty much a mainstay of Tottenham’s back line alongside Cristian Romero and one of Ben Davies or Clement Lenglet.

Many now feel that Dier should be back in the England squad ahead of the World Cup in Qatar later this year.

Dier’s last England cap came in November 2020 as he started in a 4-0 win over Iceland.

Dier hasn’t been in the squad since March 2021 with Gareth Southgate seemingly preferring other options at the back since then.

The 28-year-old is staking his claim for a recall though, especially if Southgate has designs on playing a three-man defence in Qatar.

Tottenham legend and former boss Glenn Hoddle has now praised Dier – and believes the best is yet to come for him.

Speaking to BT Sport (13/09, 5:13pm), Hoddle suggested that Dier has become a better defender since Conte’s appointment last year.

Hoddle thinks Dier has always provided quality on the ball when playing out from the back, but the way he is reading the game and marking strikers has improved.

Hoddle added that he thinks Dier could get even better in the next couple of years, suggesting that his best years are ahead of him as he continues to improve under Conte and nears his 30’s.

“I think he’s reading the game, he reads that near post, he’s much tighter with his marking and I think that’s where Conte has really helped him,” said Hoddle. “He’s a better defender. He’s always going to be good on the ball because he’s got that comfortable feeling as a midfield player in him. Now is probably his best years ahead of him, the next couple of years,” he added.
