Tottenham will have to act fast to secure Louis van Gaal or face a long delay.

Rumours over Dutch coach Louis van Gaal taking over at Tottenham are gathering pace.

Reports came out earlier this week stating that Spurs had made a decision to dispense with the managerial services of Tim Sherwood at the end of the season, which were later denied, but it’s widely considered to be only a matter of time.

If chairman Daniel Levy wants to finalise an offer to Louis van Gaal, the Telegraph report that a deadline has been set of May 7.

This leaves under one month, and is owing to the World Cup and Van Gaal’s commitments attempting to lead Netherlands to the trophy.

Despite the tournament in Brazil not starting a month after the date in May, the paper report that Van Gaal wants no distractions regarding himself to overshadow the job at hand.

“He is ready to put his future on hold when the first batch of his World Cup players meet on May 7 and training for Brazil begins.”

Such a move indicates the professionalism of the manager Spurs want to bring in, yet it leaves them with a race against the clock to get their man.

It would mean reaching an agreement ahead of the final league game of the season on May 11, a match at White Hart Lane against Aston Villa which is likely to turn into a farewell to Tim Sherwood.

Failure to agree terms with Van Gaal could leave Tottenham in a quandry. Do they look elsewhere? Or hold on until after the tournament, by which time it could be July, and risk Van Gaal going elsewhere?

The manager will already have limited preparation with his new squad, the danger seen at Manchester United last season when David Moyes waited until July 1 until beginning his new role as manager.

This left the manager and club behind in the transfer market, and any players brought in beforehand by technical director Franco Baldini may not be preferences of Van Gaal’s in any case.

Should Spurs not agree a deal before May 7 with Van Gaal, it could be that the club even re-consider their stance on Sherwood, and decide to allow him to see out his originally announced 18 month deal.
