Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen is back in training for Belgium ahead of their upcoming friendly match with Japan.

Vertonghen picked up an injury in training for Belgium last week and missed their match with Mexico at the weekend.

He was rested mainly as a precaution and now his chances of playing this week are looking up.

Belgian newspaper Nieuwsblad report Vertonghen trained with his teammates on Sunday morning and is eligible for selection.

While Vertonghen being available is good news from Tottenham’s perspective, fans would probably prefer he were rested.

Spurs have a crucial game away to Arsenal at the weekend and they need Vertonghen available.

Teammate Toby Alderweireld is battling a hamstring injury, while Davinson Sanchez has been playing in South Korea and China on Colombia’s Asian tour.

Belgium have their own defensive problems as they conceded three goals in a draw with Mexico on Friday.

This could prompt them to recall Vertonghen to try and help them out against Japan – and Tottenham fans will be crossing their fingers that the defender comes through the fixture unscathed and is available this weekend.
