Tottenham Hotspur beat Gillingham 5-0 in EFL Cup action last night.
Vincent Janssen has told the Hamstead and Highgate newspaper that Christian Eriksen allowed him to take a penalty during Tottenham Hotspur’s 5-0 win over Gillingham in the EFL Cup last night.
Tottenham were awarded a penalty when they were 2-0 up, and it provided Eriksen with a chance to complete his hat-trick.
However, the attacking midfielder declined the chance to get on the scoresheet for the third time in the match, to allow Janssen to score his first goal for the Lilywhites.
And the Dutch forward said: “I had a conversation with Chris and he told me I could take it so I have to thank him for that.
“Erik [Lamela] asked me and I said I was going to take it. It was normal – you discuss it with the players and I thought it was my chance so I took it.
“The team spirit’s good. Everybody feels confident and good for each other. I was happy he gave me the ball and I could score my first goal.”
Janssen has had a difficult time since moving to Spurs, with most his initial appearances coming as a substitute.
The former AZ Alkmaar man failed to score in any of his first six displays for Spurs, but he got off the mark yesterday evening.
Tottenham also scored goals through Josh Onomah and Lamela to get through to round four of the competition, where they will play against Liverpool.
Janssen now looks set for a run of starts in Tottenham’s first-team, as Harry Kane is out injured for up to eight weeks.
