Tottenham Hotspur started their season with a lifeless 1-0 home defeat to Everton – just weeks after beating them 3-0 at home.
Spurs were drab and uninspired for much of the game, and Everton’s new-look midfield took over proceedings.
Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure were superb in the Everton midfield, and James Rodriguez provided an extra sprinkling of class going forward.
In the end, it was a set piece that settled the game as Lucas Digne crossed for Dominic Calvert-Lewin to thunder a header past Hugo Lloris.
Tottenham barely mounted a fightback and went down with a whimper, with Jose Mourinho’s men completely lethargic.
They had very little creativity going forward today, with Harry Kane starved of service – and Giovani Lo Celso’s absence was key.

The 24-year-old is out injured right now having missed pre-season, and wasn’t deemed fit enough to feature from the bench either.
Lo Celso was outstanding in the second half of last season, and fans feel that Tottenham ‘really missed’ the Argentinian today.
Some suggested that Spurs need him back ASAP, as Tottenham are ‘useless’ without him providing forward passes in midfield.
