Tottenham Hotspur were said to be wanting to rival Manchester City for Juventus defender Dani Alves.

According to The Sun, Tottenham Hotspur made a last minute approach to attempt to sign Dani Alves.

Alves is set to move to Manchester City, but Spurs reportedly attempted to throw a spanner in the works over any deal.

Spurs, ultimately, are expected to miss out in their pursuit of Alves – but it should still be an encouraging move for supporters of the North London club.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have been linked with a mixed range of targets so far, and there are some concerns starting to form about how much ambition Tottenham are showing.

Juventus' Dani Alves reacts

Spurs have been generally bought for the future, rather than concentrating on the present in recent times.

But their reported approach for Alves suggests that things may just be changing for the Lilywhites.

Alves is 34, and his arrival at Tottenham would have broken Pochettino’s usual transfer policy.

With Spurs now genuine Premier League title contenders, they need to invest in quality to keep them competing at the top end of England’s top flight.

And if Spurs continue to target players of Alves’ reputation and class, then that can only stand Pochettino’s side in good stead for the upcoming campaign.
