Toby Alderweireld has given his two cents on Tottenham Hotspur’s trophy dilemma.
Tottenham Hotspur fans on Twitter are loving what Toby Alderweireld has said.
Tottenham’s exit from two domestic cup competitions in the space of three days has fuelled debate over what is more important for Mauricio Pochettino, who fielded a weakened team in Sunday’s surprise defeat by Crystal Palace in the FA Cup: silverware or the top four.
Pochettino, likely to go trophy-less for a fifth successive season, told The Guardian that winning cups only serves to ‘build egos’, arguing that maintaining the Lilywhites’ place in the Champions League is more important.
But Alderweireld has told Sky Sports that he and his team-mates do indeed care about silverware, but echoed Pochettino’s sentiments about qualification to Europe’s elite competition.
“We want to win trophies of course. We don’t want to go out in the cup. If you see in the last couple of years how stable we have been to stay in the top four.”
And it looks like Tottenham fans – who haven’t seen their side win anything in 11 years – are agreeing with the 29-year-old’s balance on this issue, while some believe it indicates that the linked-away stalwart wants to stay.
Alderweireld only has 18 months left on his Tottenham contract and another transfer saga is bound to crop up this summer.
Spurs chief Daniel Levy has so far failed to tie him down to a new deal, but anything is possible with a year and a half left on his existing deal.
