Tottenham fans had very different reactions to seeing Toby Alderweireld play all 90 minutes for Belgium on Tuesday night.
Alderweireld has not started a Premier League game for Tottenham in 2018, as he makes a slow recovery from injury while his contract dispute drags on.
He did start last night against Saudi Arabia and kept a clean sheet in an easy 4-0 win.
Alderweireld’s performance brought out differing reactions from Tottenham fans.
On one hand, there were supporters who saw Alderweireld’s selection as a terrible sign, a player that is deemed not ready for his club, but perfectly fit to start for his country.
A sign he could be off in the summer as speculated?
On the other hand, fans who feel more positive about the situation are hoping simply that this draws a line under Alderweireld’s fitness issues and he can play a crucial role at a key stage of the season.
This weekend Tottenham take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, a vital game for their hopes to seal a top four place as they seek to maintain a five point gap over the Blues.
Just perhaps… playing for Spurs again will reignite his love for the club and convince him to sign a new deal.
If he is left out at the weekend, then fans will really begin to worry…
