Tottenham Hotspur fans don’t want Toby Alderweireld sold, even at an increased price.
The Telegraph have reported that Tottenham will raise Alderweireld’s asking price, if his release clause is not met by the end of the week.
Tottenham are currently powerless to resist if a side bids £25 million for Alderweireld, due to a clause in his contract.
However, this stipulation expires on Friday, and Daniel Levy reportedly intends to up Alderweireld’s price-tag to £40 million after that.
If Spurs did get £40 million for a 30-year-old, who had one year left on his contract, it could surely be considered decent business in normal circumstances.
But Alderweireld’s is so crucial and popular at Tottenham that supporters do not want to see him leave, even at that price, and have demanded that he is offered new terms.
It is rather bizarre why no club have activated Alderweireld’s release clause, as he looks to be one of the best value for money signings on the market right now.
Alderweireld has suggested that he is happy to stay at Tottenham though, and he even wore the captain’s armband in their first pre-season friendly.
If Alderweireld is a Tottenham player over the coming season, he will surely have a key part to play in the heart of their defence.
