Tottenham Hotspur are considering exercising their option to extend Erik Lamela’s contract until 2020, according to ESPN.

Lamela’s existing £65,000-a-week deal is due to expire at the end of next season. However, the report adds that Tottenham are in no rush to activate the extension given the Argentine’s susceptibility to injury. And that gives Spurs added security in the wake of recent interest from clubs in England and Italy.

Lamela, for whom Tottenham paid Roma £30 million six years ago, recently returned to Mauricio Pochettino’s starting 11 after a lengthy absence, and he impressed during Tuesday’s 2-2 draw against Juventus in the Champions League’s last 16.

However, ESPN reports Spurs could yet consider substantial offers for the attacking midfielder next summer.

And not all Spurs fans are convinced about keeping Lamela, with some going so far as to question the club’s priorities, amid fresh uncertainty surrounding the future of key defender Toby Alderweireld.
